Accessibility statement.

The standard we work to

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. That is the benchmark referenced by Australian government digital standards and it is the level we hold ourselves to.

We say “aim to meet” deliberately. This site has been built with those requirements in mind and checked as we built it, but it has not yet been independently audited or tested with a range of assistive technology users. Until it has, we will not claim conformance we have not evidenced. That is the same standard of evidence we ask of the providers we audit.

What we have done

• Text and background colours meet AA contrast requirements throughout
• The whole site can be operated by keyboard, with a visible focus indicator on every interactive element
• The mobile menu, buttons and form controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels; navigation and footer links meet the 24 by 24 pixel minimum
• Headings follow a real hierarchy, so screen reader users can navigate by structure rather than reading everything in order
• Every form field has a permanently visible label, not a placeholder that disappears when you type
• Images carry alternative text, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers rather than described pointlessly
• Links are distinguishable by more than colour alone
• Text reflows without loss of content at 400% zoom and on small screens
• Page language is declared, and the site does not rely on animation, movement or timing to convey anything

Known limitations

Being straight about the gaps is more useful than a blanket claim of compliance.

• No independent audit yet. The site has not been tested by an external assessor or by a panel of assistive technology users. We intend to arrange this.
• Screen reader testing has been limited. The site has not been systematically tested across JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver.
• No Easy Read version. The language on this site is professional and dense, aimed at practitioners and policy audiences. We can provide an Easy Read summary of what the Centre does on request, and we are considering publishing one.
• Linked sites are not ours. CDERP College, All Abilities Agency and publisher pages we link to are outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
• Published papers are hosted by their publishers. Journal PDFs vary in accessibility and we cannot change them. If you need a paper in an accessible format, ask us and we will provide what we can.

You never have to use the enquiry form. Email enquiries@cderp.com.au, call 1300 001 349, or have a family member, support person or advocate contact us on your behalf. Tell us how you prefer to be contacted and we will work to it.

If you are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment, you can contact us through the National Relay Service at accesshub.gov.au. If you need an interpreter, the Translating and Interpreting Service is available on 131 450, and we will meet the cost of interpreting for our conversation.

Tell us when it fails

If something on this site does not work for you, we want to know, and we would rather hear about a small annoyance than have you give up on it.

Tell us what you were trying to do, what happened, and what you were using if you know. We will acknowledge within five business days, tell you what we intend to do, and give you the information you were after in a form that works in the meantime.
